FULFILLING THE LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

Northwestern University has a two-year language requirement for students wishing to graduate from the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. You can fulfill the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Language Requirement in three ways:
  • by scoring a 4 or higher in the Advanced Placement Examination;
  • by passing both, the German Placement Test and the German Validation Examination given by the German Department;
  • by passing the Intemediate German Language Course 102-3 (given in the spring) with a C- or better.

Incoming or transfer students who intend to register for a German course (either to satisfy the WCAS Language Proficiency Requirement or to simply continue studying German), MUST take the German Placement Exam before being allowed to register for any German course at Northwestern University. Before registering for any course consult the section on Placement Exam or contact the director of undergraduate studies Franziska Lys at 847-491-8298 (write to flys@northwestern.edu).
