SUMMER STUDY ABROAD

The lazy days of summer - - an opportune time to travel abroad and try out your hard-won German language skills!

Northwestern Summer Study Abroad Program in Bayreuth (7 weeks in August & September) This summer program offers NU students at all levels an opportunity to immersion themselves in German culture while interacting with participants from over 40 countries. Language instruction in the mornings is complemented with cultural and social activities in the afternoons and evenings. Students can earn up to 4 units of credits.

Other Opportunities for Study & Internships in Germany

Students choose between programs organized by German universities, the Goethe Institute and U.S. universities. Programs are typically from 3 to 8 weeks and run from June through September. Students are encouraged to work closely with the Department of German to identify the program that best meets their needs. Students typically return from these programs with marked language improvement and a clear appreciation for Austrian, German and European culture.

Summer Courses at German Universities

Almost every university in Germany has a summer language program (3-8 weeks) that typically draws participants from Europe and all over the world. Morning language instruction is complemented by afternoon cultural and recreational activities. Between 10-40 Northwestern students participate in these courses ever year, and based on their experiences and program evaluations, the German Department now has a solid base on which to recommend programs.There are courses during June, July, August and September.

Here is a listing of courses by month. A significant number of NU students who have participated in these programs have provided comments and impressions of the programs.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides special summer grants for students with a good academic record. Applications are typically due January 31: University Summer Course Grants are for 3-4 week courses for undergraduates (stipend covers the cost of program, room and board).

Goethe Institute Language Programs The Goethe Instiute has 14 program sites in Germany which offer language and culture programs for 4, 6 or 8 weeks. Whether in a small village, university town or big city, the Goethe institute instructors are recognized as leaders in language instruction and have a reputation for helping students immerse themselves in German culture.

Specialized Programs: Internships and Music Festivals

  • USA Interns Prorgam (Application deadline: Early January) USA-Interns is an internship exchange program that provides American university students with the opportunity to work and live abroad for eight to twelve weeks.  This life-altering experience allows the next generation of German and American leaders to gain first-hand insights into the culture and daily life of the guest country. Housing & living stipend provided.

  • American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) (Mid July to mid August) AIMS is the leading European summer vocal program and the most comprehensive course for future opera and concert performers. The Frestival Orchestra provides a unique opportunity for instrumentalists to gain significant performance experience while also experience life in Graz, Austria. 3-8 Northwestern students participate in this program each year

    Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Mid July to end of August) The International Orchestral Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival enjoys a superb reputation as one of the premier summer festival orchestrasas in Europe. Founded by s the centerpiece of the educational work performed by the great classical musical festival held in the north of Germany. However, it doesn't only delight audiences in Schleswig-Holstein with its concerts, but also makes appearances on concert tours to Europe's musical centers. Wonderful opportunity to play in a European orchestra with other young performers. One or two NU students are generally accepted into this highly competitive program.
  • Europäisches Musikfest Stuttgart 2007 (Auditions in March - Takes place end August-Sept) Festivalensemble Stuttgart – an annual project organised by the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart was founded in 2001 by Helmuth Rilling and has rapidly developed into one of Europe´s leading ensembles of its kind. A two week rehearsal period by Lake Constance in southern Germany is followed by two weeks of performing at the European Music Festival Stuttgart and at other prestigious music festivals within Germany and Europe.
