AFFILIATED PROGRAMS

ETH Zürich Federal Institute of Technology Zurich
This unique exchange program allows students to enroll in engineering and science courses as well as participate in research projects with professors. Students pay Northwestern tuition and receive a monthly stipend which covers the cost of room and board. Housing in dorms with other Swiss or international students. Students must have 2 years of college German.

Antioch Program in Tübingen
This program strives for a complete immersion experience for participants. Students enroll in 2 months of langauge preparation at a Goethe Institute in Germany, which is followed by an additional 4 week orientation program at the University of Tübingen. Students enroll in regular university courses and are housed in dormitories. Students must have 2 years of college German.

Smith in Hamburg
Students are enrolled full time at the University of Hamburg and may take classes in any field of study including arts, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. Students also enroll in a fall semester language class taught at the Smith Center, which also offers two other courses taught specifically for study abroad students each semester. Students may be required to enroll in a second language course for the spring semester. There is a one-month orientation with intensive language training at the start of the program.   Students live in dormitories with other German and international students.

IES Semester/Year in Freiburg
Great program for students who want to spend a semester or year in a medium sized university town. Semester students take German and four courses in the humanities and social sciences. Students in Freiburg for the year can choose from regular university course offerings. Students live in dormitories with other German students. Students must have 2 years of college German.

IES Semester/Year in Berlin
Since the fall of the wall, Berlin has established itself as the cultural and political center of Germany. The IES Program in Berlin offers students the opportunity to learn about contemporary Germany and the unification of Europe within the framework of the European Union. Students may study a semester enrolled in IES courses or if they remain a year can also enroll in courses at the Humboldt or Free University. Students must have 2 years of college German.

IES Semester/Year in Vienna

This program is primarily for students in the School of Music. It offers a broad range of classes in Austrian and European literature, history and cutlure. The program is unique in the German speaking countries because it has established relationships with the musical conservatories in Vienna and offers classes in music theory and history along with opportunties to work on performance techniques with teachers and coaches. Students are required to enroll in an intensive German course while participating in the program.
