THE GERMAN PLACEMENT EXAM

Northwestern's German Placement Exam is a test given on the World Wide Web. We would like students to take the network-based German Placement Exam before coming to campus in the Fall. It's really easy and there are many advantages to taking the test early:

  • They will know your placement results in plenty of time to find information about the course they have been placed into.
  • They can take the exam at a time when you feel ready to be tested.
  • They can take the time you need to complete the exam.
  • They can work in a quiet and relaxing testing environment.

If a sudent does not have access to the Internet at home, at school or in a library, they can always take the German Placement Exam when they arrive on Campus.

The placement exam can be taken any time on a computer at home, at your school or in your library. Students are not allowed to use books or other sources (a friend) for this exam. We are interested in what a student can do in German at this time. The results of the exam together with the information of the questionnaire will help us place a student into the proper German class. Even though this is called an exam, we are not interested in giving a grade for the work nor will the results be released to anybody else than appropriate personnel in the German Department and to the student. This is simply a measure to assess current German skills from which a student is going to grow. Students may take as much time as they like for this exam. However, most students spend on average 1 1/2 hours. Once a student has submitted the exam, it will take three to four days to process it. The results will be posted on the web. If a student does not have access to the Internet, he/she can take the placement test on campus as soon as he/she arrives. If there are questions, students should come to the placement orientation session.
