The Graduate School at Northwestern now requires all prospective students to apply for admission using the on-line application. In addition to the Application for Admission and Financial Aid, the German department also requires the following documents for application to the Ph.D. program.

  • official transcripts;
  • GRE scores (foreign applicants must also submit TOEFL scores);
  • three letters of recommendation;
  • a paper or writing sample representative of their work.
Applicants must mail all supporting documents directly to:

Director of Graduate Studies, Department of German

Northwestern University
Evanston, IL 60208-2203

Prospective students are welcome to visit campus informally and to stop by the department for general information. In March, we invite admitted students to attend a Visiting Weekend, during which students meet with faculty and current graduate students, tour the library, department, and other campus facilities, and sit in on graduate seminars.

FINANCIAL AID

All students who are accepted into the program are accorded four years of guaranteed support which generally takes the following form: a first-year fellowship (full tuition and stipend) and three years of teaching assistantships thereafter (full tuition and stipend). Summer research stipends are also be readily available. Support beyond the fourth year can be secured in a variety of forms, including Dissertation Year Fellowships and (for students with the requisite linguistic skills) participation in the Paris Program in Critical Theory.
